[ENGLISH BELOW]

¡Salud!

❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

As veteran translators, we are used to be asked to give students some advice.  And it makes sense: our lived experiences and lessons learned have a lot to offer to the new generations. But, in times when they harp on at us about being obsolete and doomed to be replaced by the machine, at Ciempiés we are filled with joy, renewed hope, and gratitude when we see young people are still choosing to study T&I.

That's why, to celebrate our day, we wanted to hear and spread the voice of our colleagues-in-the-making. To that end, we published an interview open to anyone who wanted to answer it. The questions were:

1. Tell us how you'd like to be mentioned. You can choose anything from complete anonymity to full disclosure (name and surname, pronouns, age, university, city, country, social media, etc.)
2. What does translation / interpretation mean to you? Why did you choose to study T&I?
3. What are your biggest dreams, profession-wise?

4. And your biggest fears?
5. Anything else you'd like to share?

Their testimonies are below in English and Spanish.

Happy day, dear colleagues. Let's toast at the top at our voices: translation will be human, or it will not be at all! Cheers!

Vane Milonees

Translation allows us to send and receive messages across languages and cultures.
I first fell in love with Brazil and their culture, afterwards, I understood that path started by learning their language.
My biggest dream is to work with literature in Spanish and Portuguese.
My fear is not having enough time and resources for a full-time dedication. Also, I think translation is too difficult and I'm afraid of not being good enough. Finally—although it might seem the biggest fear—there's AI.
I'm doing my first translation jobs, and each step is new. The best thing is I believe that feeling will never change, which is great.

Vane Milonees

Translation is a bridge betwwen cultures, is making two different worlds connect. I decided to study translation because I've always been interested in all the work behind the translation of a book, subtitling, etc.
My biggest dream is translation becoming my livelihood. My biggest fear is AI replacing this beautiful profession—I don't think it possible, but I'm afraid anyway.

I embraced translation after becoming a writer, so for me translation was specifically about structuring my writing. Blank pages often overwhelmed me, so it was relaxing to start from something.

I want to be able to fully live with my income as a translator, and my biggest fear is that I won't be able to and end up working in retail.

Indira Martelli, she/her, 30 years old, student at the ENS Lenguas Vivas Sofía B. De Spangenberg in Buenos Aires, Argentina

Aymila Ece Belirdi, 23, Bursa Technical University (ella/él)

I initially chose T&I only because I was skilled in it but I was quickly radicalized in my approach to the field. Access to equal opportunities and rights in education, health, career, social development and so many more fields are locked behind a language barrier for a significant number of people. Translation can be a tool by which communities and individuals can access justice and better understand the world around them. I would like to become a translator and/or interpreter so that I can work to make as many materials and as much content available to the people who need it throughout my lifetime.
I am hoping to end up in academia and work as a professor because I think shaping the way future interpreters see the field would be the highest honor I could be given. If possible, I would have liked to spend some time as an interpreter in high stakes situations such as criminal justice cases or natural disasters before then. Working as an overseas news anchor would be incredible but that's not a position people like me could ever get in Türkiye.
My biggest fear is dying without my found family to surround me, and before I can restore even a bit of rightness to my environment.

Aymila Ece Belirdi, 23, Bursa Technical University (She/Her & He/Him)

Judith

Translation is for me Reading and Understanding in one language and Transmitting in another. I decided to study translation so I could learn to express myself in another language and become one of those who make communication easier.
My biggest dream is to be a good translator. My fear is making mistakes.
Translation is a lovely art of communication.

Judith

I have always been an avid reader and also very interested in English language. I was a teacher for many years and, by chance, eight years ago I met a translator, and it was an a-ha moment—I realized that was what I wanted for my life. What I didn't know was, as years passed by, my studying would make me fall more and more in love of the language, sociolinguistics, proofreading, editing... In my years as a translation student, subject after subject, finals after finals, I confirmed time and time again it was "my thing". Also, I want to bring the tools I acquired studying translation when stepping into the publishing field as an editor.
I want to work at a publisher collaborating with Latin American emerging artists, I want to translate and do adaptations for different levels of ESL. My biggest fear is not being able to find my place in the publishing landscape.

My name is Julia (she/her), I'm 30 years old and I'm an Argentine living in Chile. I studied at the ENS Lenguas Vivas Sofía B. De Spangenberg, in Buenos Aires.

Translation is my way of helping people saving the gap between two cultures (and languages) I'm passionate about. The metaphorical bridge in the form of a translation won't be designed in the same way by two different translators, and my biggest joy is make that gap between cultures invisible.
I want to be able to make a living without having to beg for work or to demote myself to a machine's editor. My fear is seeing all my efforts being in vain due to the lack of job opportunities.
The outlook is pretty much ill-omened.

Translation has been in my life since early childhood and I knew I’d be in this field for a long time. I always knew I wanted to connect with people from different backgrounds and learn from foreign cultures. It is a privilege to share knowledge between languages and cultures. Diversity is something to celebrate with pride and I’m here for it.
I’d like to translate subtitles and do voice acting projects for animations/films/series/games etc. My biggest fear is AI. Someone stop this nonsense please (at least generative AI, we need technology to help us not steal our professions and creativity!!) Like help me do the dishes don’t copy art and steal my inner whimsy please!
I have no regrets being a part of this community <3
